Red Rock Crossing Oak Creek Canyon Sedona, Arizona

Oak Creek Canyon: Everything You Need To Know

Just north of Sedona lies Oak Creek Canyon, a beautiful river gorge renowned as one of Arizona’s most scenic drives. Highway 89A winds its way through the canyon, twisting through lush forests and beneath towering red rock formations. At the canyon floor, Oak Creek flows gently for twelve miles, offering a peaceful escape from its desert surroundings.

A Year Round Destination

Oak Creek is a local favorite all year long. In the summer months, visitors come to swim, wade, slide down smooth sandstone, fish in the quiet waters, or simply explore the untamed beauty of the canyon. The fall season brings stunning colors that envelop the canyon and make for an awe-inspiring drive or hike. Even in the winter season, the road and trails stay open and can make for quite the experience when snow blankets the ground. The surrounding red rock landscape in contrast with the bright white snow makes for breathtaking scenery from the warmth of your car.

Slide Rock State Park

One of the area’s most popular attractions is Slide Rock State Park, tucked in the heart of the canyon. Once a historic apple farm, the park is now best known for its natural 80-foot sandstone waterslide that is carved into the creek. It’s a great place to cool off while surrounded by stunning red rock scenery.

During the fall, visitors can go apple picking and learn about Arizona’s agricultural roots. The orchard was first planted in 1912, and today the park is home to 300 apple trees. Since park hours and fees change seasonally, be sure to check the Slide Rock website for the most up-to-date information before you visit.

Fishing

A short hike upstream of the swimming hole, Oak Creek has gentle pools and banks for fishing. The creek hosts a variety of species, including rainbow trout, brown trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and catfish. Since trout tend to swim upstream, casting your line from downstream helps your bait drift naturally, increasing the likelihood of a successful catch. Please note that fishing is not permitted in the designated swimming areas of Slide Rock.

Hiking

West Fork of Oak Creek is a hidden gem hike located deep within the canyon. The trail winds beneath towering canyon walls and through shady forests, with stretches that take you underneath red rock arches and into narrow canyon passages. The full trail extends 6.5 miles and includes 13 stream crossings, although most hikers turn around 3 miles in, at the first creek crossing. Past that point, you will need to get your feet wet. This hike is truly stunning, and showcases the powerful way that water has shaped the canyon over time. Learn More >
