Cathedral Rock: Everything You Need To Know For Your Visit

Cathedral Rock is an iconic sandstone butte, located in the Coconino National Forest just beyond Sedona. Its grand beauty makes it one of the most photographed landmarks in Arizona and the panoramic views from the top are unbeatable.

About Cathedral Rock

Formed over millions of years, Cathedral Rock is more than a stunning natural wonder— it’s also known to be a powerful vortex, radiating a powerful, healing energy from the earth. You may see visitors meditating or practicing yoga as you hike. All year round, Cathedral Rock attracts hikers, spiritual seekers, and those looking to explore Sedona’s natural beauty.

The Trail

The Cathedral Rock trail is a short, but steep 1.1 mile trek with 740 feet of elevation. Be prepared for rock scrambling as you ascend. While the hike is challenging, the views are incredibly rewarding. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Local tip: For an unforgettable experience, hike the trail during sunset. The glowing red rocks against the vibrant sky is a view that cannot be missed.

Where to Park

The trailhead is typically accessible by two nearby parking lots. However, from Thursday to Sunday, these lots are closed, and the trailhead must be accessed via the Sedona Shuttle Service.

If you plan on hiking on a weekday, we recommend arriving early to ensure a smooth parking experience.

What to Bring

Don’t forget to pack water and sun protection for this challenging hike! Backpacks are especially helpful on this trail, since there are some rock scrambling sections where you will need two free hands. We also highly recommend wearing hiking shoes with good grip to help navigate the well-worn path.
